Why engage myth? Why not just be empirical, logical beings? Because we aren't. Our psyches need meaning. Our brains are not only analytical, but also intuitive. The paradox of being human. The point then becomes to find that balance, and most importantly, to not confuse myth with empirical facts. But when we look out into space, and hence back in time, who could not be awestruck? Who could not wonder about our place in this amazing Universe?

I saw the whole series of interviews that Bill Moyers did with Joseph Campbell and his Power of Myth. It was riveting, enlightening, I came away from the experience with a deeper understanding of why I think, the way I think. Traditions passed down through story.

I think we do need to create a dialogue about the earth; there ARE no divisions of people if you look at the earth from that far off perspective.Yayy for humanity!

Joseph Campbell has been the mentor of artists, writers, poets and philosophers since he burst onto the consciousness of informed college students and thinkers. His interviews with Bill Moyers add another dimension to this enlightened being. He was also warm, humble and compassionate and truly loved humanity, not as we know it, but as it could become.

Camphel has always been a source of inspiration.... really, what is the difference between the bones of the pope and that of the prostitute, the bones of George Bush and that of the Street child on the streets of Accra, the king and the pauper...what is the difference?

Joseph Cambell was/is THE source of everything myth, where we came from, where we are probably going. Get a copy of "The Power of Myth". Your view of human development will forever be changed! It doesn't get better than this!

This is it! Earth from space is the symbol that will drive the new mythology for humanity. I'm doing my part to spread the message. http://www.earthpledge.net

Do yourself a HUGE favor; go to your public library and check out the six video tapes (you still own a VCR...don't you?) The Power of Myth. I had never heard of Joseph Campbell and was not only rocked back on my heels, but rocked right out of my way of thinking. I think of him as my "duala." His ideas helped "birth" the Gaia Girls Book Series (juvenile fiction) This snippet of video is like someone describing the taste of a peach vs. biting into one picked of the tree!

It is probably not fair to the integrity of the this Joseph Campbell series to have reviews written on the basis of such a small snippet of a huge amount of background information that the series "Power of Myth" is. Personally, I love the work of Joseph Campbell, and this particular small segment ... and I agree with his view here; but then I know the context of what he is saying too.

Why recreate the inefficiencies of the past and dead civilisations..? Myth tends to bury truth under successive layers of esoteria..editing for expediencies....tradition..ritual.. myth..not to my thinking..we need sanity, clarity, truth, fact, logical progressive road maps to understandign and empiracle education of a different sort based on experience, and observable effects..all we are, now.. is illusion, ego driven agendas that serve the priestly classes and holders of secret information..how convenient..for them.. look at hinduism, catholicism, evangelicals.. point in any direction and hit contrived, distorted, falsely valued, short sighted bs..tools of control..manipulation and deceit. Each of us has the tool we need to achieve illumination..right inside us..teach meditation. teach how to search out truth from within..elementary..unaltered technical instruction..strip away the fabricated.. seek simplicity..count the breath.. have the questions clearly formed in mind.. count, breath, expect..listen.. be vigilant..implement..is right or wrong so difficult for us genius's that we need all the glitter and fable.. no..we have hollywood..we are born far wiser than the civilisation produces after destroying our innate intelligence with their contrivances..children do know right from wrong instinctively.. we cloud their innocence with rationalisation upon rationalisation.. We are long the past the time of excusing our own actions based on the sad state of our intellect..morals..our forgivable primitiveness no longer works..nor justifies this abberrant need to control behavior from cradle to grave..using conformity over logic and reason..teach discipline..the new earth civilisation dosnt need embellishments.. it needs facts, figures, and example.. it needs to see beyond its short sightedness and proclivity toward the embecilic. peace.

Good, good point. The society the new myth has to talk about is the "society" of the planet as a whole. We must have myths teaching us how to live, how to live with this Earth Society.
